Herniated Disc

What is a herniated disc?

A herniated disc, sometimes called a “slipped disc,” occurs when a disc in the upper back presses on a nearby nerve, causing pain. Discs are soft cushions located between each vertebra in the spine. Because the spinal nerves run close to these discs, any damage to a disc can cause it to press on a nerve and trigger discomfort. The upper back is the least common area for a herniated disc to occur.

What causes a herniated disc?

A disc is a circular cushion of tissue that sits between each vertebra in the spine. It has a soft, gel-like centre surrounded by a tough outer layer. A herniated disc occurs when the outer layer becomes damaged, allowing the soft inner material to protrude through the tear. This protrusion can press on nearby nerves, causing pain. Damage to the disc’s outer layer can be caused by:

  • Wear and tear
  • Trauma, such as lifting a heavy load with a bent back
  • Repetitive flexing (bending) of the upper back

What are the symptoms of a herniated disc?

A herniated disc in the upper spine can put pressure on the surrounding nerves, leading to symptoms that may be felt across the upper back. These symptoms can include:

  • Pain in the upper back that may radiate to the chest or abdomen
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms, chest, or upper back
  • Muscle weakness in the shoulders, arms, or hands
  • Difficulty with certain movements due to pain or stiffness
  • Reduced range of motion in the spine
  • Pain that worsens with coughing, sneezing, or twisting

Physiotherapy for a herniated disc

Physiotherapy can be highly effective in relieving the symptoms of a herniated disc. At acephysiosports.com, our physiotherapists provide a personalised assessment and treatment plan tailored to your needs.

  • Manual therapy to relieve pressure and improve spinal alignment
  • Specific exercises to strengthen supporting muscles and improve flexibility
  • Posture correction and ergonomic advice
  • Gentle stretching to reduce stiffness and improve mobility
  • Core stability training to support the spine
  • Heat or cold therapy to manage pain and inflammation
  • Education on activity modification to prevent symptom aggravation

Can a herniated disc cause any long-term effects?

Physiotherapy generally leads to a successful outcome for most patients. However, injections or surgery may be considered for those who continue to experience pain despite physiotherapy.
