What is a fractured collar bone?

A fractured collarbone refers to a break in the clavicle bone. Physiotherapy is an effective treatment that helps promote healing and restore full shoulder function.

How Can a Fractured Collar Bone Happen?

A collarbone fracture typically occurs after a direct impact to the shoulder, such as hitting a stationary object like a wall or the floor, or during contact with a moving object like an opponent in sports. The collarbone can also break if you fall on your elbow or outstretched hand, with the force traveling along the arm bones to the collarbone.

Physiotherapy Treatment for a Fractured Collar Bone

After an X-ray at the hospital, the initial treatment usually involves resting the arm in a sling for several weeks. Following this, the physiotherapists at Ace Physio Sports can assess your injury, estimate the healing time, and develop a personalised rehabilitation program. Treatment may include:

  • Electrotherapy
  • Exercise Programmes
  • Sports Injury Rehab
  • Postural Realignment
  • Taping

What Shouldn’t I Do If I Have Fractured My Collar Bone?

If you suspect a fractured clavicle, avoid any activities that might cause the broken bone ends to move against each other. Do not use the injured arm until it has been properly assessed in the accident and emergency department. Additionally, avoid actions that increase blood flow to the injury site, such as hot showers, heat rubs, massage, and alcohol consumption, as these can worsen bleeding and delay recovery.

Could There Be Any Long-Term Effects Following a Fractured Collar Bone?

Most clavicle fractures heal without complications within a few weeks. Sometimes, a visible bump may remain where the bone healed, but this is usually a cosmetic issue that doesn’t cause pain or limit arm function. In rare cases, the broken bone ends may fail to heal properly (non-union), which might require surgery or other treatments to encourage healing.
