Calcific Tendinopathy of the Rotator Cuff

What is it calcific tendinopathy?

The rotator cuff consists of four small muscles in the shoulder that play a vital role in supporting and moving the shoulder joint. These muscles connect to the arm bone via tendons. Calcific tendinopathy occurs when calcium deposits build up within one or more of these tendons, causing pain and stiffness. Physiotherapy is an effective treatment option to help relieve symptoms and restore shoulder function.

What Causes Calcific Tendinopathy?

The exact cause of calcific tendinopathy is not fully understood. It is believed to result from overuse or injury to a rotator cuff tendon, most commonly the supraspinatus tendon. Repetitive strain can cause wear and tear, leading to the buildup of calcium deposits within the tendon, which may also trigger inflammation and swelling.

What Are the Symptoms of Calcific Tendinopathy?

Calcific tendinopathy typically causes pain in the upper arm and shoulder, often described as a deep, intense ache. The pain may be present even when the arm is at rest and usually worsens with movement. Other symptoms may include:

  • reduced range of movement
  • Swelling/Inflamation
  • stiffness
  • weakness
  • numbness

What Should I Do If I Have Calcific Tendinopathy?

Calcific tendinopathy often does not improve without proper treatment. If you have or suspect you have this condition, it’s important to contact Ace Physio Sports and schedule a physiotherapy assessment to receive an accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment plan.

Calcific Tendinopathy of the Rotator Cuff – Physiotherapy Treatment

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in treating calcific tendinopathy. At Ace Physio Sports, your physiotherapist will first diagnose the condition and assess its severity, which may involve referrals for imaging such as X-rays or MRI scans. Based on these findings, a tailored treatment plan will be created. This plan may include activity modification, use of anti-inflammatory medications, and sometimes an injection of anti-inflammatory medication directly into the affected tendon. Other physiotherapy treatments may include:

  • Ultrasound
  • Manipulation / Mobilisation
  • Acupuncture
  • Soft Tissue Treatment
  • Taping

What Shouldn’t I Do If I Have Calcific Tendinopathy?

If you suspect you have calcific tendinopathy, do not ignore the symptoms. Delaying treatment can cause the condition to worsen, potentially leading to a longer and more difficult recovery.

Does Calcific Tendinopathy Have Any Long-Term Effects?

When properly diagnosed and treated, calcific tendinopathy usually does not cause long-term problems. However, without treatment, it can result in persistent upper arm pain and an extended break from normal activities. In some cases, even with treatment, symptoms may persist, and surgery might be necessary to remove the calcium deposits and relieve pain.
