Stiff Neck

What is a stiff neck?

A stiff neck is when your neck feels painful and it becomes hard to move, especially when turning your head from side to side. Many people describe this uncomfortable limitation as having a "stiff neck."

Neck pain and stiffness can come from different parts of the neck, such as muscles, nerves, bones (vertebrae), or the discs between the bones. Sometimes, pain in nearby areas like the shoulder, jaw, head, or upper arm can also cause neck discomfort.

Physiotherapy is an effective treatment to help reduce pain and restore movement in a stiff neck.

What can cause a stiff neck?

A stiff neck is usually caused by muscle strain or spasms. This often happens because of poor posture, sleeping in an uncomfortable position, or making a sudden, awkward movement with your head.

What are the symptoms of a stiff neck?

A stiff neck leads to reduced movement in the neck, often accompanied by pain. Usually, one side of the neck feels tighter or more restricted than the other. Other symptoms may include:

  • weakness
  • numbness
  • spasm
  • tingling / pins and needles

What should I do if I have a stiff neck?

If you have a stiff neck, try to keep your neck moving gently as much as you can. If the pain is very bad, consider seeing your doctor or nurse to discuss pain relief options such as painkillers or anti-inflammatory medicines, if suitable for you.

What shouldn’t I do if I have a stiff neck?

Avoid staying in one position for too long, like sitting at a computer or driving for extended periods, as these can make your neck pain worse. Also, try not to do activities that increase your discomfort.
