Cervical Rib Syndrome

What Is Cervical Rib Syndrome?

Cervical rib syndrome is a condition caused by the presence of an extra rib arising from the seventh cervical vertebra. This additional rib can compress nearby nerves or blood vessels, leading to symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the lower arm and hand. In some cases, it may contribute to or cause Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, where neurovascular structures are compressed as they pass from the neck to the arm.

What Causes Cervical Rib Syndrome?

A neck fracture is normally caused by severe trauma to the neck. Examples include:

Cervical rib syndrome is a congenital condition, meaning it is present from birth, and is caused by the development of an extra rib extending from the seventh cervical vertebra. While many individuals with a cervical rib remain symptom-free, symptoms can occur when the extra bone compresses nearby nerves or blood vessels. This compression may be triggered or worsened by factors such as poor posture, repetitive overhead movements, or trauma, leading to the onset of symptoms.

What are the symptoms of cervical rib syndrome?

Symptoms of cervical rib syndrome typically arise when the extra rib places pressure on the nerves or blood vessels passing through the thoracic outlet. Common symptoms include:

  • Reduced range of movement of the neck
  • Pain on movement of the neck
  • Weakness in lower arm and hand
  • Pins and needles or numbness in lower arm and hand

Physiotherapy for Cervical Rib Syndrome

Physiotherapy can play an important role in managing the symptoms of cervical rib syndrome, although it cannot correct the underlying anatomical cause. The goal of physiotherapy is to reduce pain, improve posture, and relieve pressure on the affected nerves and blood vessels. A tailored treatment plan may include:

  • Heat therapy for pain relief
  • Exercises for arm and hand to improve circulation and strength
  • Posture correction exercises to decrease symptoms
  • Shoulder and neck exercises to improve posture and relieve symptoms

Can Cervical Rib Syndrome Cause Any Long-Term Effects?

While many cases of cervical rib syndrome can be managed effectively with physiotherapy, some individuals may experience persistent or worsening symptoms. If conservative treatment provides little relief, especially in severe cases where nerve or vascular compression is significant, surgery may be necessary. This typically involves removing the extra rib to relieve pressure on the nerves and blood vessels. With appropriate intervention—whether non-surgical or surgical—most people can achieve long-term symptom control and improved function.
