Tendon Injury

What is a tendon injury in the hand?

A tendon injury in the hand involves damage to one of the tendons responsible for movement and control. Physiotherapy is an effective treatment to support healing, restore function, and reduce pain.

What can cause a tendon injury in the hand?

Most tendon injuries in the hand are caused by a deep cut that either tears or completely severs the tendon. In some cases, a sudden force—such as from a fall—can cause the bone attached to the tendon to pull on it, resulting in damage. This type of injury is often seen in contact sports like football and rugby.

What are the symptoms of a tendon injury in the hand?

Severe pain and tenderness are often experienced at the site of the injury. Swelling is also common, and moving the fingers or wrist may be difficult and painful. If blood vessels are damaged alongside the tendon, bruising may develop over the affected area. Other symptoms may include:

  • Weakness when trying to grip or lift objects
  • A snapping or popping sensation at the time of injury
  • A visible gap or deformity in the tendon
  • Inability to bend or straighten a finger or thumb
  • Numbness or tingling if nerves are also affected

What should I do if I have a tendon injury in the hand?

If you suspect a tendon injury in your hand, you should attend your local accident and emergency department as soon as possible. A doctor or hand specialist will assess your condition, provide pain relief, and offer an accurate diagnosis. You may require an X-ray to check for associated fractures. While waiting for medical attention, apply ice to the injured area using an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a moist towel to help reduce pain and swelling. Compression with a bandage can also help manage swelling. Depending on the results of the assessment and X-ray, treatment may involve wearing a splint or cast to immobilise and protect the hand. In more severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to repair the damaged tendon.

What shouldn’t I do if I have a tendon injury in the hand?

If you suspect a tendon injury in your hand, avoid moving the area, as further movement could worsen the damage. It's important to minimise blood flow to the injured site to prevent increased swelling. This means you should avoid activities that raise circulation, such as excessive movement, applying heat rubs, taking hot baths, or consuming alcohol. Ignoring the injury and continuing with normal activities can delay healing and potentially lead to long-term complications. Early rest and proper care are essential for recovery.

Physiotherapy for a tendon injury in the hand.

Once your tendon has sufficiently healed, you can begin a physiotherapy programme aimed at restoring your previous level of function and helping you return to your daily activities. Physiotherapy will focus on reducing stiffness through stretching and strengthening exercises, as well as joint and soft tissue mobilisations. If you continue to experience pain or swelling, treatments such as cryotherapy (ice therapy) and taping techniques may be used to provide support and relief. Other treatments may include:

  • Manipulation / Mobilisation
  • Massage
  • Wax therapy
  • Soft Tissue Treatment
  • Electrotherapy

Can a tendon injury in the hand have any long-term effects?

Most tendon injuries in the hand heal successfully within a few weeks. However, if the tendon has ruptured and requires surgical intervention, recovery will take significantly longer and may result in lasting pain and stiffness. The hand contains a complex network of blood vessels, nerves, ligaments, and joints, and severe injuries may damage these surrounding structures. This can further delay recovery and may require more intensive treatment and extended physiotherapy.
