CARDIAC REHAB

CARDIAC REHAB

Cardiac rehab is a medically supervised program designed to improve heart health after a heart problem or surgery.  It usually involves exercise education on diet and stress management techniques. Cardiac rehab can help prevent a second heart attack and decrease the risk of death over one to three years after participating in the program. However, only 20% to 30% of those eligible each year enroll in a cardiac rehab program.

Cardiac rehab is a supervised program for people who have experienced heart conditions. The goal is to improve the person’s health and quality of life, prevent further deterioration, and reduce return to the hospital for heart–related issues. The rehab program includes exercise training, education, and counselling.

Cardiac rehab is for someone of any age who has had:

A heart attack
Heart failure
Heart valve surgery
A coronary artery bypass grafting
A percutaneous coronary intervention, or stent placement

What exercise you will do during cardiac rehab?

Cardiac rehab exercises can vary depending on the fitness level and risk factors you started with. Exercise may include:

  • Aerobic exercise like walking, riding a stationary bike, or using an elliptical or step trainer.
  • Activities to strengthen muscles such as free weights or using a cable machine and resistance band.

What Happens During Cardiac Rehab?

The staff will supervise you as you exercise. You’ll start out slowly according to their instructions. As you complete more sessions, you’ll gain confidence and endurance. Gradually the duration and intensity of the exercise will increase according to the fitness level and medical history. Your heart rate and blood pressure will be checked regularly to make sure you are safe while exercising.
