Angina

What is dizziness?

Angina is characterized by intense chest pain or pressure that can interfere with normal daily activities. Tasks such as walking short distances, climbing stairs, or doing household shopping may become tiring or painful due to reduced blood flow to the heart. With guided physiotherapy, symptoms of angina can be managed more effectively, helping to build cardiovascular endurance, reduce discomfort, and lower the likelihood of future cardiac issues.

Symptoms of Angina

The pain of angina is often described as a tight, squeezing, or burning sensation in the chest that can also spread to the neck, jaw, shoulders, or back. These episodes are commonly accompanied by shortness of breath, excessive sweating, and nausea, which together can significantly impact everyday functioning if not properly addressed.

Causes of Angina

The heart, like any other muscle, requires a constant supply of oxygen-rich blood to function properly. When the coronary arteries that supply this blood become narrowed or blocked, the heart muscle may spasm due to insufficient oxygen delivery. This lack of blood flow creates the painful and restrictive sensation known as angina.

Diagnosis of Angina

When angina is suspected, doctors may recommend an electrocardiogram (ECG) to track the heart’s rhythm and electrical activity. Often, you may be asked to walk or jog on a treadmill while wearing the ECG monitor, as this helps to assess how your heart responds under physical stress and whether the symptoms of angina are triggered.

Another important diagnostic tool is the coronary angiogram, where a dye is introduced through a catheter into the femoral artery, usually at the groin. This dye makes it possible for doctors to visualize narrowed or blocked arteries on X-ray imaging, allowing them to identify the source of angina more precisely.

Treatment for Angina

Managing angina begins with addressing the underlying cause of blocked arteries. Certain modifiable risk factors—such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and poor fitness—can significantly increase the chance of developing angina. Non-modifiable factors such as advancing age, a family history of heart disease, or health conditions like diabetes must also be carefully considered.

With medical guidance, many risk factors can be controlled. For example, medication can help reduce cholesterol and blood pressure, while structured exercise and diet plans can aid weight management. Lifestyle adjustments such as quitting smoking, moderating alcohol intake, and adopting a heart-healthy diet are essential for reducing angina symptoms and preventing future cardiac events.

At Ace Physio Sports, our physiotherapists work with you to build safe exercise routines that improve cardiovascular fitness, manage weight, and boost overall heart health—helping you gradually return to daily activities with confidence.
