Parsonage-Turner Syndrome

What is Parsonage-Turner syndrome?

Parsonage-Turner syndrome is a rare neurological condition characterised by sudden pain in the shoulder region, followed by muscle weakness. Because it is uncommon and its symptoms can mimic other conditions, it is frequently misdiagnosed.

What causes Parsonage-Turner syndrome?

This condition occurs due to inflammation of the brachial plexus, a complex network of nerves that control movement and sensation in the shoulder, arm, and hand. The exact reason for this inflammation is still unknown, making the underlying cause difficult to predict or prevent.

What are the symptoms of Parsonage-Turner syndrome?

Symptoms typically begin with an abrupt onset of severe pain across the top of the shoulder blade, which may radiate into the upper arm. Within hours or days, weakness develops in the shoulder and upper arm muscles, and in more severe cases, partial or complete paralysis of the affected muscles can occur.

Physiotherapy for Parsonage-Turner syndrome

While there is no single proven cure for Parsonage-Turner syndrome, physiotherapy can play an important role in recovery and symptom management. At Physio.co.uk, our physiotherapists focus on creating a tailored rehabilitation plan to meet each individual’s needs. Treatment may include targeted exercises to restore strength, mobility, and function, stretching routines to maintain joint flexibility, and strategies to reduce pain and prevent secondary complications. The goal is to support gradual improvement, promote nerve recovery, and help you return to your daily activities as safely and efficiently as possible.

Can Parsonage-Turner syndrome cause any long-term effects?

Most people with Parsonage-Turner syndrome make a complete recovery, although the healing process can take anywhere from several months to a few years, depending on the severity of the condition and the individual’s overall health. Relapses are rare but can occur, even after full recovery. In the majority of cases, strength and function are fully restored, allowing a return to normal activities without lasting impairment.
