What is a frozen shoulder?
Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterized by inflammation and thickening of the shoulder joint’s capsule, leading to stiffness and restricted movement. Physiotherapy is effective in reducing symptoms and helping restore shoulder mobility.
How Does a Frozen Shoulder Develop?
The exact cause of frozen shoulder remains unclear. It commonly affects middle-aged and older adults and is thought to result from irritation of the shoulder joint and its surrounding capsule. This irritation triggers an inflammatory reaction known as ‘capsulitis.’ Along with this inflammation, small scar-like adhesions form between the folds of the capsule, contributing to stiffness and limited movement.
Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder typically causes persistent pain and a gradual loss of shoulder movement. The pain can be aching, dull, or sharp, usually felt deep inside the shoulder and sometimes radiating down the outer upper arm. Pain intensity may fluctuate daily depending on arm use, often interfering with daily activities and sleep. The loss of movement happens because scarring within the joint capsule restricts motion, progressively reducing the shoulder’s range. While gentle stretching of these adhesions is safe, it may temporarily increase pain. Other symptoms can include weakness, numbness, muscle spasms, and occasional joint clicking.
What to Do if You Have a Frozen Shoulder
If you suspect you have a frozen shoulder, it’s important to consult a physiotherapist promptly. Early intervention can help manage pain and improve shoulder mobility more effectively.
Physiotherapy for Frozen Shoulder
After diagnosis, the physiotherapists at Ace Physio Sports will create a personalized treatment program aimed at relieving pain and improving your shoulder’s mobility. This may involve anti-inflammatory medications, electrotherapy treatments, and targeted exercises to stretch tight tissues, strengthen weakened muscles, and enhance overall movement. If conservative measures do not adequately ease your symptoms, your physiotherapist might suggest a referral for a corticosteroid injection into the shoulder joint. Other supportive physiotherapy techniques may also be incorporated to help speed up your recovery.
What Not to Do If You Have a Frozen Shoulder
If you suspect you have a frozen shoulder, don’t ignore the symptoms. Delaying treatment can lead to increased pain and stiffness, making your condition worse and extending the time needed to recover. Early intervention is key to a smoother and faster recovery.
Are There Any Long-Term Effects of Frozen Shoulder?
In some cases, frozen shoulder may improve naturally over the course of up to a year. However, treatment significantly shortens this recovery period. Generally, once healed, the long-term outlook is positive unless there is another underlying shoulder condition impacting your recovery.
