Whiplash

What is whiplash?

"Whiplash is a neck injury, often caused by a sudden back-and-forth movement of the head, similar to the cracking of a whip. This rapid acceleration and deceleration can damage muscles, ligaments, discs, and other structures in the neck. Physiotherapy is highly effective in reducing pain, restoring movement, and supporting full recovery from whiplash."

How does whiplash happen?

Whiplash usually occurs when a sudden impact forces the head to jerk forward, backward, or both in quick succession. This is most common in road traffic accidents, but can also happen during contact sports or any incident involving a sudden, forceful movement. The rapid motion can strain or injure the muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues in the neck.

What are the symptoms of whiplash?

In many cases, whiplash symptoms do not appear immediately after the injury. Instead, pain and stiffness may gradually develop over the next 24 to 72 hours. Discomfort is most often felt in the neck, but it can also spread to the head, shoulders, or arms. The pain may range from a dull, constant ache to a sharp sensation that worsens with movement. Additional symptoms can include:

  • joint clicking
  • joint locking
  • tingling / pins and needles
  • stiffness

What should I do if I have a whiplash injury?

Whiplash injuries often require professional care to heal properly and prevent long-term problems. It’s important to book an appointment with a physiotherapist as soon as possible after your accident. Early assessment and treatment can help speed up recovery and reduce the risk of ongoing pain or stiffness.

Physiotherapy treatment for whiplash

Physiotherapy plays a vital role in the recovery from whiplash injuries. During your first visit, your physiotherapist will assess your condition, confirm the diagnosis, and determine the severity of the injury. Based on the assessment, they will design a personalised treatment plan aimed at reducing pain, improving neck movement, and restoring normal function. Early treatment may include gentle pain-relief techniques, followed by targeted exercises to improve flexibility and strength. Physiotherapy may include:

  • Manipulation / Mobilisation
  • Postural Realignment
  • Soft Tissue Treatment
  • Proprioceptive Exercise

Could there be any long-term effects from a whiplash injury?

Most mild to moderate whiplash injuries heal completely without causing lasting problems, provided they are diagnosed early and treated correctly. In these cases, recovery usually occurs within a few weeks to a few months. However, severe whiplash can sometimes result in long-term complications, such as disc degeneration or joint damage in the neck, which may lead to ongoing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
