Cervical Spondylosis

What is cervical spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis is a common condition that happens as part of the natural aging process. The neck consists of seven bones (vertebrae) stacked on top of each other, separated by discs that act like cushions. Over time, these discs can lose their height and flexibility, and the edges of the bones may develop rough areas or bone spurs. These changes can put pressure on nearby muscles, ligaments, and nerves, leading to symptoms like neck pain, stiffness, and sometimes tingling or weakness in the arms. Physiotherapy plays a key role in reducing these symptoms and improving neck function through targeted exercises and posture correction.

People with cervical spondylosis may experience symptoms that come and go, often triggered by certain movements, poor posture, or stress. The severity can vary from mild discomfort to more intense pain. Common symptoms include:

  • Manipulation / Mobilisation
  • Exercise Programmes
  • Massage
  • Postural Realignment
  • Ergonomic Assessment

What Should I Do if I Have Cervical Spondylosis?

If you think you may have cervical spondylosis, it’s important to stay active and avoid long periods of rest. Keep your neck moving gently within a comfortable range and avoid positions that cause strain. Most importantly, schedule an assessment with a physiotherapist. Early intervention can significantly reduce pain, improve mobility, and prevent the condition from worsening.

What Shouldn’t I Do if I Have Cervical Spondylosis?

Do not ignore your symptoms or delay seeking treatment. Avoid prolonged inactivity or poor posture, as this can lead to increased stiffness and discomfort. Without proper care, the condition may gradually worsen, leading to more persistent pain and reduced neck function. Consulting a physiotherapist early helps prevent long-term complications.
