Wrist Strain

What is a Wrist Sprain?

A wrist sprain is an injury to one or more of the ligaments that support the wrist joint. The wrist is made up of many small bones connected by a complex network of ligaments, which can be easily sprained. A sprain may involve a minor tear in some ligament fibres or, in more severe cases, a complete rupture. Common causes of wrist sprains include:

  • Falling onto an outstretched hand
  • Sudden twisting or impact during sports or physical activity
  • Overuse or repetitive strain
  • Forceful grabbing or lifting of heavy objects

Minor wrist sprains can often heal on their own; however, with physiotherapy intervention, recovery is typically faster and the risk of re-injury is reduced, as the wrist is rehabilitated more effectively.

How can Physiotherapists Treat a Wrist Sprain?

With the experience and knowledge of the physiotherapists at Ace Physio & Sports, they will conduct a comprehensive assessment to provide an accurate diagnosis. Following this, they will work with you to rehabilitate your injury using a variety of treatment modalities aimed at achieving your recovery goals. Some of the interventions that may be used during physiotherapy sessions for a wrist sprain include:

  • Ice therapy
  • Electrotherapy
  • Stretching exercises
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Joint mobilisations
  • Range of movement exercises
  • Massage / frictions
  • Bracing / taping

These physiotherapeutic interventions will be applied at various stages of the healing process and may be used in combination to optimise recovery. Your experienced physiotherapist will also develop a comprehensive exercise programme tailored to your individual needs and stage of rehabilitation.
