Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. This condition can lead to pain, altered sensation, and reduced hand function. Physiotherapy is an effective and non-invasive treatment option for managing and relieving symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

How does carpal tunnel syndrome happen?

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it travels through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. The tunnel is formed by the wrist bones on three sides and a strong, broad ligament on top, creating a narrow passageway. Alongside the median nerve, several tendons also pass through this space. If these tendons become swollen or inflamed, the tunnel's rigid walls leave little room for expansion, leading to pressure on the nerve. This compression disrupts the nerve’s ability to transmit signals between the brain and the hand, resulting in various symptoms.

What are the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause a range of symptoms, all resulting from compression of the median nerve. The most common symptoms include pain in the wrist and hand, along with numbness and tingling in the fingers—typically sparing the little finger. These sensations may occur during wrist movement or even at rest, and are often more noticeable at night. The condition can also lead to weakness in the hand, which may result in clumsiness, frequent dropping of objects, and difficulty performing activities that require a firm grip, such as certain sports. Other symptoms may include:

  • reduced range of movement
  • swelling/inflamation
  • stiffness

What should I do if I have carpal tunnel syndrome?

If you have, or suspect you have, carpal tunnel syndrome, it is important to consult a physiotherapist for a comprehensive assessment. In the meantime, you should avoid any activities that aggravate your symptoms to prevent further irritation of the median nerve.

Physiotherapy treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Physiotherapy plays a vital role in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. A physiotherapist can confirm the diagnosis and determine the severity of the condition. In some cases, a nerve conduction study may be recommended to assess how well signals are transmitted along the affected nerve. Based on the assessment, a tailored treatment plan will be developed. This may include activity modification, anti-inflammatory medication, electrotherapy, and splinting of the wrist and hand. Other treatment options include:

  • Soft Tissue Treatment
  • Taping
  • Proprioceptive Exercise
  • Postural Realignment
  • Ergonomic Assessment

In severe or long-standing cases, surgery may be required. Following surgery, active physiotherapy is required to restore full function to your hand by strengthening your hand, returning the range of movement in your wrist and hand to normal, and desensitising your scar.

What shouldn’t I do if I have carpal tunnel syndrome?

If you have carpal tunnel syndrome, it’s important not to ignore the condition, as doing so may lead to worsening symptoms and a longer recovery period.

Could there be any long-term effects from carpal tunnel syndrome?

In many cases of carpal tunnel syndrome, there are no long-term effects if the condition is properly diagnosed and appropriately treated. However, in more serious cases, surgery may be necessary to relieve the nerve compression.
