Skier's Thumb

What is Skiers Thumb?

Skier’s thumb is an injury to the collateral ligaments of the thumb, most commonly the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) at the base of the thumb. This injury may occur due to overuse or a traumatic event, such as a fall onto an outstretched hand while holding a ski pole. The ligament can be partially torn or completely ruptured. In the case of a complete rupture, surgery is usually required as the stability of the thumb is significantly compromised, severely affecting grip strength and function. Partial tears, however, typically heal well without surgical intervention and respond effectively to conservative management, including rest, splinting, and physiotherapy.

Conservative management of Skier’s thumb typically includes a structured course of physiotherapy. Physiotherapy plays a vital role in optimising the healing process, reducing pain and swelling, and accelerating recovery. A tailored rehabilitation programme also aims to restore full function of the thumb and minimise the risk of re-injury by addressing strength, stability, and range of motion.
