What is Snapping Hip?

Snapping hip is a condition where a noticeable clicking or popping sound occurs in the hip during movement, often caused by tendons rubbing over bony structures. While it may be painless in some cases, it can also lead to discomfort or restricted motion. Physiotherapy offers effective treatment to reduce symptoms and restore normal hip function.

How Does Snapping Hip Occur?

Snapping hip often affects athletes and dancers, particularly those involved in repetitive leg movements like ballet. Normally, the muscles and tendons around the hip glide smoothly over the bony structures. However, if a muscle or tendon becomes tight, it can catch or rub against a bony prominence. As the hip moves, this tight tissue may suddenly release, creating a noticeable snapping sensation or sound.

What Are the Symptoms of Snapping Hip?

Snapping hip is typically identified by a clicking or popping sound in the hip during movement. This may be accompanied by a sensation of something catching and releasing inside the joint, often as a tendon moves over bone. While the snapping is usually painless, other symptoms can include:

  • pain
  • reduced range of movement
  • swelling/inflammation
  • stiffness
  • weakness

What Should I Do If I Think I Have Snapping Hip?

If you notice snapping or clicking in your hip—especially if it’s accompanied by pain or limited mobility—it’s important to seek a physiotherapy assessment promptly. Early diagnosis can help prevent further irritation and guide you toward effective treatment.

  • Pincer Impingement: The hip socket is unusually deep, leading the femoral head and neck to pinch against its rim.
