Hip Pain

A hip joint injury typically involves overstretching or damage to the hip joint itself or the surrounding supporting structures such as ligaments, tendons, and muscles.

Hip pain is a broad term used to describe discomfort arising from irritation, inflammation, or injury to various components of the hip. These may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, or the joint capsule.

  • Osteoarthritis of the hip

  • Iliopsoas bursitis
  • Trochanteric bursitis
  • ITB band syndrome

How Does Hip Pain Happen?

Hip pain can result from direct trauma, overuse, poor biomechanics, or degenerative conditions. It arises when any structure within or surrounding the hip joint becomes irritated, inflamed, or injured.

What Are the Symptoms of Hip Pain?

Hip pain is often felt deep within the joint and may radiate toward the front of the thigh. The discomfort may be a dull ache or a sharp, stabbing sensation, often worsened by hip movement. Other symptoms may include:

  • reduced range of movement
  • swelling/inflammation
  • stiffness
  • weakness
  • numbness
  • spasm

What should I do if I have hip pain?

If you are experiencing hip pain or suspect an injury to the hip joint, it's important to arrange a physiotherapy assessment as soon as possible. Early intervention helps prevent the issue from worsening and promotes a faster recovery.

Physiotherapy treatment for hip pain

A physiotherapist plays a key role in diagnosing and treating hip joint injuries. Depending on your condition, they may refer you for imaging tests such as an X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI to confirm the diagnosis. Based on the results, your physiotherapist will create a tailored treatment plan. Treatment options may include:

  • Hydrotherapy
  • Massage
  • Core Stability Exercises
  • Taping
  • Exercise Programmes
  • Electrotherapy

What Shouldn’t I Do If I Have Hip Pain?

If you suspect an injury to your hip joint, do not ignore the symptoms. Ignoring the problem can lead to worsening of the condition and a longer, more complicated recovery.

  • Pincer Impingement: The hip socket is unusually deep, leading the femoral head and neck to pinch against its rim.
